Aldi has announced it will be trialling a new deposit return scheme in one of their West Lothian branches before it is rolled out nationwide.
The popular supermarket's new scheme is the first of its kind and it will encourage shoppers to return single-use plastic or glass bottles, as well as aluminium drinks cans, to the Aldi store in Bathgate
From today, shoppers looking to be more sustainable will be able to deposit these items into a reverse vending machine, which is situated in the store's car park, in exchange for vouchers to be redeemed with their shopping.
For each item deposited, shoppers will be able to get 10p in the form of a voucher, up to a maximum of £5.
The new trial will allow the supermarket to gain handy information before it is officially rolled out nationwide next year, July 2022.
Richard Holloway, Regional Managing Director for Aldi Scotland, said: “We’re always looking for new ways to look after our environment and promote recycling whenever possible.
“We hope local customers in Bathgate will embrace this trial and we will use their feedback to inform our plans as we prepare for the deposit return scheme roll out in Scotland.”
The new deposit return scheme is just one of the new sustainable incentives offered by the supermarket chain in its bid to combat plastic waste.
As part of their pledge to continue tackling plastic packaging and waste, Aldi has committed to removing any plastics in-stores and they aim to have 50% of plastic packaging to be made from recyclable materials.
